Protesters and sexual abuse survivors gathered outside a Melbourne court this morning as Cardinal George Pell arrived to face historical sex offence charges.
The cardinal was flanked by police and his legal team, including top criminal barrister Robert Richter QC. He was described by reporters on the ground as “incredibly pale”.
I’m at court and George #Pell just walked past, flanked by police. He looks incredibly pale. Someone shouted “truth”, he remained silent.

Prior to his arrival, crowds had swelled outside the magistrates court to the point where police were forced to close off a lane off William Street.

Details of the allegations against Pell have not been made public, except that he was charged by Victoria Police last month with offences involving multiple complaints.
Today’s hearing is expected to be brief, with dates set for his next appearance. Pell will face court at 10am.
