Well, if you were concerns about the policy being floated by Labor about increased tax on your beloved durries, you might not have an escape. Increasing speculation suggests that Malcolm Turnbull’s government is seriously considering a tobacco excise of their own, which might send the cost of a pack of darts up to $40.
It’s not the first time Turnbull has considered this – in 2009 he went in hard for a tobacco excise tax to offset healthcare costs. Now it looks like it’s wormed its way back into his budgetary aspirations, after Opposition Leader Bill Shorten proposed the same thing.
Treasurer Scott Morrison wouldn’t comment on this “speculation“, but the Herald Sun reports that it is seriously being considered as a revenue source for the government, especially seeing as they won’t touch negative gearing or raising the GST.
Labor reckons it’d raise $47 billion a year. The Coalition are obviously keeping mum, because we’re not even supposed to know they’re considering it.
Bad news for those who love a dart but aren’t keen on forking out forty bucks a pack.
