Fargo’s Second Season Will Head Back In Time

After we found out earlier today that the absolutely freaking magnificent first season of Fargo has been rewarded with a second season renewal, the flood of information as to what will make up season number two has well and truly opened.

The self-contained nature of season one prevents it from moving forward from where it finished up, so instead the show is headed back in time, though it will remain within the same universe. The second season will cover an event alluded to in the first season by lead character Molly Solverson‘s ex-cop turned cafe owner Dad, Lou Solverson. The show will head back to 1975 and to Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Towards the end of season one, Lou tells Billy Bob Thornton‘s psychopathic character Lorne Malvo of a horrific event in Sioux Falls that lead to him leaving the force, which involved bodies “stacked so high, you could’ve climbed to the second floor.” The season will focus on a 33-year old Lou, fresh back from Vietnam, and the events leading up to that incident. This means that the character of Lou will return, but not the actor – Keith Carradine.
Speaking at a Television Critics Association panel, Hawley went further, laying out the framework for what season two will revolve around:

Lou Solverson is a state police officer. His wife Betsy, her dad is the sheriff of Rock County. [Lou’s] father-in-law is a character in this next go-round. I don’t know if we see any other Solversons… I’m excited to spend time with Molly’s mom.”

So, alas, whilst Molly Solverson will appear as a 3 year old child, sadly the show’s breakout star Allison Tolman will not appear. But fear not, her general, overall genius is certainly not lost on anyone, much less Noah Hawley: “she should be in everything everyone ever makes as far as I’m concerned.
Suffice to say, we are SO KEEN.
