Everything Is A Lie: The ‘Nearby Cars’ On The Uber Map Might Be Fake

Motherboard published an investigative article about Uber recently. It was a thorough and interesting long-form piece, but due to the fact that we all have short attention spans and need punchy pieces of SEXY! INFORMATION to keep us EXPLOSIONS INTERESTED, people zeroed in on one seemingly minor, but extremely bizarre piece of info.

This was a quoted email from an Uber Help representative, in which they state that all the ‘nearby cars’ you see on the map might not actually be there.
“The app is simply showing there are partners on the road at the time, this is not a representation of the exact numbers of drivers or their location. This is more of a visual effect letting people know that partners are searching for fares. I know this seems a misleading to you but it is meant as more of a visual effect more than an accurate location of drivers in the area. It would be better of you to think of this as a screen saver on a computer. Once a rider request a trip there will be actual information about the partners [sic] location showing up in the app.”

EXCUSE YOU? This is some bullshit

The mystery runs deeper however, as a spokesperson for Uber has backtracked very very quickly, and said to Motherboard that the maps are “generally accurate”.
Where is the truth though fam?
