Just when you thought the ‘Best of ‘ lists of 2010 had been laid to rest, it seems the year that was still begs for yet more reflection. In what could be described as the People’s Choice, the 2011 Best Weblogs for 2010 have been revealed, with the finalists being chosen by you.
Beginning in 2001, the Annual Bloggie Awards boast themselves to be the longest-running and largest blog awards. That’s some claim, considering there to be close to 200 000 000 blogs in existence, and still counting. Which begs the question of how to judge. Instead of looking to the acclaimed list makers such as Time Magazine, or perhaps to two of the most informed blog readers here at Pedestrian headquarters (Ash and Suz); the Bloggie’s have put it down to people’s choice.
200 randomly selected voters were asked to choose the finalists from the highest-ranking nominations, which have made up 29 categories in total (5 in each category, non-exclusively).
In the Best Australian and New Zealand Weblogs, we took out four of the five nominations. They include Down to Earth, Babyology, Three Ring Circus and The Design Files. A diverse range of finalists, are these really a representation of the best Australia has to offer in terms of cultural and creative commentary?
There are a few obvious choices: Pitchfork (Best Music), Garance Dore (Best European) and The Sartorialist (Best Fashion or Beauty). And there are some less-than-impressive choices: Perez (which Time fittingly named one of the year’s Most Overrated) as well as Jezebel (celebrity, sex and fashion targeted towards women. Which says a lot about how the modern woman is represented, with topics such as “Men’s Biological Clocks Are Screaming For Your Love,” and “Ke$ha’s Peed Her Pants” – both finalists for Best Gossip Blog of 2010.
In terms of Best Music, Gossip, Entertainment, Fashion and Beauty, I’d question the relevance of several finalists. Considering the progression of the ever-evolving blogosphere, it’s fair to say I expected more originality. Though I didn’t vote.
Voting is now open until Sunday, February 20. The winners will be announced February 27, from 8-10.30 pm EST on the Bloggie’s Twitter and Facebook pages. Prizes for each winner include: US$20.11 (that’s a whopping 2,011 US cents)
