A Man Has Handed Himself In Over Canberra Coward-Punch Attack

Please be aware that this article contains video footage that is extremely graphic, and should be watched with caution.

ACT Police have said that a man has handed himself over the coward-punch attack that occurred in Canberra on New Year’s Eve.
According to The Age, the man is 20 years old and from Braddon. He has been charged with one count of recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm.

He has been released on bail, and is now due to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court on January 15.

Police released the shocking footage of the attack on social media, in order to find the two men involved in the attack, and the footage has since gone viral.

According to The Age, the man is recovering from his injuries at home, and said that doctors had inserted a titanium plate and screws to help fix his broken jawbone. His jaw had been wired shut to realign his teeth.

He also said he is stressed, in chronic pain and hasn’t been able to eat or sleep since he underwent emergency surgery for the facial injury he sustained in the assault.

He said he couldn’t remember what he was speaking to the men about at all.

“I honestly didn’t think it was that bad at the time. I’m just surprised I’m alive from they way my head hit the ground.”
ACT Police Constable Jarrad Drennan described the video as “sickening” and said,
“We’re lucky that we’re not standing here today talking about a death and that we are talking about an assault. So he’s lucky – if not a miracle – that he didn’t land a certain way.”

Our thoughts are with the victim of the assault, and we wish the best for his recovery.
