Watch: Pnau – “Solid Ground”

“Solid Ground” is the second single from Pnau’s forthcoming LP Soft Universe, slated for release July 22. Cynicism says we should hold little sympathy for musicians who bemoan the trappings of their own success but Nick Littlemore’s desire for “solid ground” is both heartfelt and relatable. Of course life can get crazy when you have Elton John on speed dial and sometimes wear casual headdresses. Leave that structurally unsound Cirque du Soleil ground and get on the solid stuff. Be beholden to the little things. Sleep.

Guitarist Peter Mayes hinted at a poppier direction the last time we spoke so we’ll assume this is the new album’s “Embrace” moment. A transformative power ballad designed to turn festival crowds into choirs and soundtrack slow motion Sports Tonight montages and pensive car commercials. The clip continues 2010/11’s battle for most accurate depiction of Tumblr (we have El Guincho just ahead of Battles) as animal masks, roller skates, varsity themed anything, oil paintings, notebooks, partial nudity and a cast of slender model types slink in and out of view. The backdrop flickers between a design blogger’s living room and a generic graffiti-ridden dive bar until things get really sincere and we skip to a sun dappled NYC rooftop where the gods did decree; earnestness thy name is Littlemore. Nothing to be embarrassed about of course, what is pop music but a lovely sentiment wrapped in a lovely package? This has both. Watch below…
