Maya Hawke Just Debuted Her Indie Music Act With Two Dreamy Songs ‘Coz What Can’t She Do?

It’s unsurprising that Stranger Things star Maya Hawke is a talented individual, but it turns out she’s more than just an actress. She’s also a talented musician, kicking off a singing career with two new songs this week.

Somehow between acting gigs in Stranger Things and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, the 21-year-old managed to find the time to drop two acoustic-folk tracks to remind us that when you’re the spawn of two Hollywood icons, you really can do anything.

The songs, “Stay Open” and “To Love a Boy” feature Hawke’s own lyrical content, while the instrumentals are written by Grammy-winning musician Jesse Harris. So you know they’re bound to be good.

“I picked these two songs because the first one, ‘To Love a Boy,’ was the first song Jesse and I wrote together. It is really aspirational,” she explained. “It is a really dreamy song, and then the second one, ‘Stay Open’ is more — the whole album is going to be full of love songs. These two are really interesting to bring together as an A-side B-side because one is really about the desire to fall in love. The other one is sort of more grounded in the reality of being in love.”

She took to Instagram to announce the tracks.

Get ready for Stranger Things to take a weird Riverdale-esque turn into musical territory because Hawke isn’t the first cast member to pursue a music career. And somehow, none of them are shit.

Finn Wolfhard, who also starred in It fronts Calpurnia, a garage rock band, while Gaten Matarazzo spends his spare time in his  Work In Progress (and making guest appearances on stage with Paramore). Maya’s Scoop’s Ahoy co-worker, Joe Keery also debuted a new musical endeavour recently, with his solo project Djo coming out last month.

Great. So they’re all great actors AND good musicians. Cool. I bet they can all dance too. They’re the whole damn musical theatre package. Rude.

While Maya is an incredibly talented musician, she maintains that it’s nothing more than a passion project, at least for now.

“It has given my life some structure and purpose so that I’m not just waiting around and losing my mind and crying,” she said in an interview with Refinery29.

Ugh I just love her so much. I can’t wait to watch her grow and develop as an artist over the next few years. So much potential. If she doesn’t milk the “Uma Thurman is my mum” thing until she’s the biggest name in entertainment, I will be incredibly disappointed.
