Likely Splendour Secret Act Alt-J Debut Video App to Curb Filming on Phones at Gigs

British quartet Alt-J (who are almost undeniably the secret act to perform at Splendour this year, more on that later) have debuted technology to deter people from recording gigs on their phones.

The band were the first ever to test the app in its beta phase at their Brixton show last night. In the same vein as chattering assholes at the movies, outstretched arms attached to iPhones to film live music defy two core unspoken rules:  1) do not obstruct the vision and/or experience of others; 2) probably watch the thing you paid to see, idiot. It’s not IRL anymore when your phone plays intermediary.
Anyhoo the technology comes by way of a video app by Soundhalo.
Footage is fused with audio and each song is converted to a mixed and mastered mp4 file and sent to the ‘cloud’ right after the song ends.
At the helm of a production crew at the venue and recordings extracted directly from the sound desk, fans can can pay to download individual songs. Alt-J’s drummer, Thom Green, is hella stoked about all of this, stating: “I think it’s amazing that the whole show was streamed live on the internet. I’m glad they chose us to kick the whole thing off, it’s a real honour. It’s one of those things that you can’t really believe doesn’t already exist, it’s just so perfect. I can’t wait to see how far it goes and to watch it back myself and watch my own highlights on my phone.”
More gushing on the topic from him is probably impossible so let’s move forward.
Back on that speculation train, Alt-J will perform three Australian shows on July  27, 30 and 31. Coincidentally, Splendour In The Grass occurs July 26-July 28, with a tidy two days open right there innit? People in this country dig Alt-J, with three of their tracks making the Triple J Hottest 100 cut earier this year (#4, #64, #81). Clicher: a ‘Mystery B?nd’ is to perform. The Internet has taken that triangle and made up their collective mind. As true as rain, hitting alt+j on one’s keyboard produces that very shape. Whoaa do you believe it or is it just heresay?
Their tour is this:
Saturday, 27th July
Challenge Stadium, Perth.
Tuesday, 30th July
Festival Hall, Melbourne.
Wednesday, 31st July
Horden Pavilion, Sydney
