Death From Above 1979‘s comeback show was said to be marred last night at SXSW, after a herd of over zealous punters instigated what the media has labeled, a ‘riot’. Or, the realistic version of events: people listening to music and cheering.
The surprise gig at the Beauty Bar in Austin fostered a predictably batshit response from the hardcore 1979 fans – a few hundred of them, spilling outside the tent and into an adjacent lane way. Vicious.
DFA’s tour manager implored the crowd to shut the fuck up several times, while Sebastien Grainger necked a beer and cracked sub-par gags for the salivating disciples.
While no casualties have been reported, rumours over the use of pepper spray was rife amongst the concerned. Fans at the scene have suggested the pungent fragrance was quite possibly the foul odor being omitted from the band’s trailer – not that of pepper from aerosol family.
