BTS Fans Are Livid Over How Their Faves Are Categorised In The VMA Noms

MTV announced the nominations for the annual Video Music Awards (VMAs) today, including a brand new “Best K-Pop Group” category. But – in true BTS fashion – fans were NOT having a bar of it.

BTS fans are livid because, despite their roaring success, the Korean boy band got shunned into the ‘K-Pop’ category. They point out that BTS was more successful than a large majority of US acts this year.

The group received nominations in four different categories including ‘Best Collaboration’, ‘Best Choreography’ and Best Art Direction’. And, while these awards are still massive achievements that I sure as hell will not accomplish in my life, fans are upset at the fact that the record-breaking band were snubbed from all of the major categories.

Nominees for the major categories include Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift (10 nominations each), along with newcomers like Billie Eilish and Lil’ Nas X.

Fans allege that MTV seems to have included the ‘K-Pop’ category to appear more diverse and inclusive, without actually including these artists in the mainstream awards.

If you’re unfamiliar with the #BTSarmy, basically they’re a bunch of diehard fans who collectively work to cancel any potential enemies to the fandom. They’ve managed to make the hashtag #VMAsRacist go viral on Twitter since the news broke earlier today.

A little much? Maybe. But there’s certainly a point to be made.

Honestly, I agree, the group should be contenders n more categories. Their influence over music over the last year is difficult to even describe. They’ve definitely got a bunch of achievements under their belts, including:

  • 10 Guinness World Records
  • 135 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Social 50 Chart
  • A string of music awards including multiple Billboard Music Awards

The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards will take place on August 26, and if today’s drama is anything to go by, I’m sure it’ll be a juicy event.
