Best Tunes At Changing Lanes 2011

1. Cameras

We’ve already premiered their single earlier this season, but let it be known, these Surry Hills kids are hot property. Cameras’ deliciously dark sound has earned them fans on both sides of the pond, with the band being signed to Manimal Vinyl in the US (Bat For Lashes, Warpaint) and about to head over there for their first international tour, which includes a showcase in LA and Aussie photographer Tony Mott’s exhibition in NYC. Oh, and their new video is premiering on NME next week. Not bad for a bunch of kids who only wear black.

2. Hobophonics

It’s always a nice change when social photographers put down the SLRs and pick up the CD wallets, especially when they’re as great as Hobophonics. A spin-off of the incredibly popular Hobogestapo crew, whise shots we’ve featured on our page for years, Hobophonics sees main man Pat Stevenson mixing in all kinds of ’90s gems (think TLC meets Biggie) that would be usually be considered illegal at a festival as quintessentially hipster as this. We evem]n saw a girl in high-waisted denim shorts dancing. That never happens. You can catch hobophonics at Falcona Fridays most weeks or touring the country for various festivals both snapping and rapping.

3. Ellesquire

Aussie hip-hop, take it or leave it, right? Not with Ellesquire, a dude we know practically nothing about but who blew our minds early in the afternoon when the only thing on our minds was how quickly we could cut the line to get cider. The great thing about this guy is that he’s really into looking at himself honestly rather than telling us how great he is and how sick the rims are on his imaginary Bentley. There’s nothing like a guy making a total ass of himself and being eloquent about it. Ten points.

4. Splash Mountain

There was no way this could ever fail. Take Sweetie (FBi Arvos, Bloods, ex-Lions At Your Door) and Catcall (er, Catcall) and put them behind a pair of mixers and the results will always be amazing. We enjoyed their mid-set mix-ups today more than some of the acts they were meant to be prepping for, as they veered violently between Missy Elliot, ELO and Fleetwood Mac without apologising once for it. Overheard between sets: “What should we drop next? Ghostbusters? Yeah, that’ll be great.” Refreshingly daggy like Mix 106.5 on a Sunday morning when you’re hungover as all hell.

BRB, dancing.
