Awards shows are nothing without entertaining Kanye outbursts, and this year we got just that when the rapper almost stormed the stage after Beck‘s Album Of The Year win, thought better of it, and followed up later with a rant about how Beyoncé should have been the recipient of the award, for the sake of real artistry.
After the show, Beck spoke to Us Weekly about the whole incident, and in spite of Kanye’s epic shade, he kept his response pretty classy. “I was just so excited he was coming up,” Beck said. “He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right?”
So what about the question of whether Beyoncé’s self-titled album-slash-ode to kitchen sex should have taken top honours? “Absolutely,” said Beck. “I thought she was going to win. Come on, she’s Beyoncé!”
As for the implicit doubt that Kanye cast upon Beck’s level of artistry? “You can’t please everybody, man,” he replied. “I still love him and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does.”
