Those with property neighbouring the Sydney Opera House are concerned the price of their homes could be affected by the unattractive security bollards erected to protect pedestrians in the high-traffic area.
While the residents have been told a prettier, more permanent solution would be put in place, the only change the concrete bollards have seen in a year has been a coat of brown paint, likely a move meant to disguise them, but has only made them look more like pieces of shit.
Of course, these kinds of structures have become a necessary addition to popular tourist locations given the current climate, but locals are pissed off with the lack of permanent solution they were promised. The Sydney Opera House corporation have not commented on what the long-term solution would be and when it could be expected, but did provide a statement to The Australian.
“The safety and security of our patrons, visitors and staff is always our first priority,” a spokeswoman said. “The Opera House continues to work closely with NSW Police and all relevant authorities on security matters and to implement appropriate measures based on their advice.”
As you’d expect, the barriers will remain where they are for this week’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, along with security patrols and other security measures. A nearby resident, John Henderson, says he and others living in the apartment building known as “The Toaster“ have attended meetings with Opera House staff to work through the issues.
“I know they are trying to figure out how to manage the traffic down there. They told us something was in the works,” he said. “They will have to do something soon; the residents don’t want to wake up and see those ugly bollards every morning, no one wants to see that.”
It sucks for anyone rich enough to own property in such a popular area, but if it means preventing a vehicular attack like the recent one seen in Melbourne, so fucking be it.
