WATCH: The Trailer For Netflix Horror ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ Looks Like A Winner

Let me get something out of the way: I think Nightcrawler is one of the best movies of the decade. We have not seen a more incisive critique of modern media and consumer politics in our times, and also Jake Gyllenhaal is suitably nuts in it too. So it is reasonable to say that I am quite excited for the second collab between director Dan Gillroy and Gyllenhaal, Velvet Buzzsaw.

I think the first trailer, released today, has merely made me keener! Thanks Netflix!

Gyllenhaal plays an eccentric art critic named Morf Vandewalt, who is slowly driven insane when he discovers that paintings he has found locked up in an apartment owned by a dead insane genius are actually haunted by some kind of malevolent presence. Along the way: critiques about the artworld and capitalism. That’s what we like, baby!

The cast also includes Rene Russo – another Nightcrawler alumni – John Malkovich, Toni Collette, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge and Billy Magnussen.

Velvet Buzzsaw will have its world premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival on January 27, and then hits Netflix on February 1.
