Fans Already Want Taika Waititi To Replace James Gunn As ‘GOTG 3’ Director

Fans of Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel have called for Taika Waititi to replace James Gunn as director of GOTG Vol. 3 after Disney severed ties with Gunn, earlier today.

The 51-year-old was sacked after a series of disturbing tweets from 2008 to 2011 resurfaced online. The tweets showed the director making multiple jokes about rape and paedophilia.

Following his dismissal, Gunn said in a statement to Variety he had accepted the “business decision taken” and offered his “sincere and heartfelt regret” for past actions. Gunn also tweeted a five-part apology.

The chatter on Twitter is that chances are, if Gunn had already completed a script for the film, it might have to be rewritten by someone else. And with the third instalment due for release in 2020, a number of fans have called for Thor: Ragnarok director Waititi to step into the role.

Here are just a few tweets of what the fans had to say:

Though some fans liked the idea of Waititi as GOTG director, others also pointed out Disney should include American screenwriter Nicole Perlman – an original writer of the first GOTG film – in the third instalment in some form of contribution whether this be in writing or producing.

Perlman will be a writer on the upcoming Captain Marvel, she’ll also work on the solo Black Widow film.

As of this moment, Disney has not announced a replacement director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Earlier today, Dave Bautista who plays Drax in the film defended Gunn and tweeted he was “NOT ok with what’s happening to him”.

“I will have more to say but for right now all I will say is this… @JamesGunn is one of the most loving, caring, good natured people I have ever met. He’s gentle and kind and cares deeply for people and animals. He’s made mistakes. We all have. I’m NOT ok with what’s happening to him.”

Waititi is currently on set filming his dark comedy Jojo Rabbit, World War II satire about a boy and his best-imaginary-friend, Hitler, played by none other than Waititi himself. Rebel Wilson, Sam Rockwell, Thomasin McKenzie, Roman Griffin Davis, and Scarlett Johansson co-star.

Filming is currently taking place in or around Prague, Czech Republic.
