Tom Cruise Tweets His Return To The Danger Zone With ‘Top Gun 2’ Snap

It’s the year 2018 and Tom Cruise has just reminded us Top Gun 2 is actually happening after more than 30 years on the bench.

Top Gun, which originally starred Anthony Edwards and Kelly McGillis is by far one of the most famous film’s Cruise is known for. It also flung Val Kilmer and Meg Ryan into Hollywood stardom.

A quintessential flick of the 80s, Top Gun has since popped up in series like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Archer without any title-dropping because the film’s just that iconic. Not to mention its original track Take My Breath Away by Berlin won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song in 1986.

News of the sequel first surfaced back in July 2017 when producer of the original film, Jerry Bruckheimer, posted that Joe Kosinski (Tron, Oblivion) had signed on as director.  Bruckheimer has returned to produce the sequel, a job also undertaken by Cruise.

The sequel named Top Gun: Maverick will see Cruise reprise his role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in present time as your modern military man dealing with a bunch of drones and maybe some volleyball action on the beach with heaps of body oil.

Earlier today, Cruise posted a snap to his twitter with the caption and hashtag “Day1” with Bruckheimer and Skydance Media tagged in the pic as well.

Pictured: Maverick intensely staring down the horizon feeling his unyielding need for speed.

Yes, this is a long-awaited sequel and yes there is a 50/50 chance this may flop but Kosinski has already said the film will adapt and not repeat.

In an interview with ComingSoon.net back in 2017 Kosinski said:

“The Navy is very different now than it was in 1986. Back then, they hadn’t been in any war for 15 or 20 years at that point. The tone of that movie and what those guys were doing was very different. Now, here in 2017, the Navy’s been at war for 20 years. It’s just a different world now, so you can’t remake the first movie. It has to adapt.”

Although, Kosinksi does want to recreate the feels of the original and give us a “front-seat into the world of Naval aviation and what it’s like to be in a fighter jet.”

No word yet on whether Kilmer, who has recently battled throat cancer, will return to his role as Iceman.

As you can imagine, a lot of people are freaking the hell out:

And as to quote my partner:

“HOLY FUCKING FUCKING FUCK

SWEET BABY JESUS CHRIST

I AM SHAKING”.

Maverick shall return to the danger zone July 12, 2019.
