The Simpsons Hipsterfy With Daft Punk, American Apparel, The AV Club

On last night’s genius even though it’s six-years-too-late episode of The Simpsons, “The Day The Earth Stood Cool,” the entry level citizens of Springfield become engulfed by hipsterdom when two zany hipsters from Portland (voiced by Portlandia creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein) relocate next door to the perpetually uncool Simpson family.

Think of it as the unofficial sequel to the series’ most memorable satirisation of American youth culture, ‘Homerpalooza’, which featured an immortal rumination on sarcasm, “I don’t even know anymore”, and cameos from circa ’96 buzz bands Smashing Pumpkins, Cypress Hill and Sonic Youth.

Twelve years later and the cool kids haven’t changed much, this time they’re just into things like Daft Punk, American Apparel and The AV Club. All of which featured in last night’s episode.
