Stoya Gives Candid Interview About Changing The Porn Industry From Within

Adult film actress Stoya has given a candid interview about working to ‘fix’ the porn industry from within.

As you’re probably aware, late last year Stoya became the subject of intense media scrutiny after she accused her ex-boyfriend and fellow adult film star James Deen of raping her while they were in a relationship.
Her accusations spurred a number of other high profile women – 13 in total – to come forward with their own accusations of sexual assault or being threatened by Deen. After giving an interview to The Guardian following the accusations in December, she largely retreated, halting all on-camera work and stepping back from TrenchcoatX, the website she’d launched with Kayden Kross

She’s now spoken to NY Mag about going back to work and her desire to fix the porn industry from within.

“Right now the only things standing out about porn are the garbage,” she said. “And I know you don’t fix something by walking away from it.”

With TrenchcoatX (she retuned to work in April), she’s “trying to make better porn, trying to make porn that doesn’t suck.” It’s not feminist (on this point, she’s very clear) but it does push this ~crazy~ notion of consent: that “the number of times you’ve said ‘yes’ does not in any way disempower you to say ‘no’ at any point, for any reason.”

And although she plans to return to on-camera work in the coming months, for now she’s happy behind the camera, filming a series of scenes of a 26-year-old transgender activist named Ava. This has in-turn inspired Stoya to use her own body to talk about again.

“Ava wants to show a sexualised trans body is what inspired me to say, Okay, I want to show a sexualised ageing body,” she says. “And I’m really the best person positioned to do this.”

Although the article goes deep into the history between Stoya and Deen, she herself has very little to say about him – and more power to her.

“What I don’t want is for my entire career and therefore entire life to be all about James and what he did to me,” she says. “Has my life not been all about James and what he did to me long enough?”
