‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ Is Officially Copping A Sequel In 2022

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

There’s good news for spider-fans today, with official confirmation that the much-loved Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is copping a sequel in 2022.

Sony unveiled the announcement on Friday, Tweeting out a warped and glitchy Spidey logo, along with a release date of April 8 and a spider emoji.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was a rare critical and commercial smash, bringing in more than $375 million world-wide and winning an Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

The film features the character of Miles Morales, who is bitten by a radioactive spider and takes up the mantle of Spider-Man while being trained by a Peter Parker from another dimension.

It stars Shameik Moore and Jake Johnson, and has a wild array of cameos, including the likes of John Mulaney and Nicolas Cage as different iterations of spidey.

Tom Holland, who plays the live-action Spider-Man, revealed that he had a cameo in Spider-Verse that sadly did not come to fruition. He told UK publication JOE:

“At one point, I was supposed to be in it. Yeah, there was going to be another Peter Parker. It was a scene in a train station or something and it was going to be like an Easter egg. I was gonna walk through the background and say like, ‘Hey, kid!’ or something. Never happened. Heartbroken.”

Earlier this year, Spidey appeared to be out of the MCU after Disney and Sony failed to agree on the terms of a deal to keep him in.

He was finally reinstated some months back, thanks in part to multiple appeals from Tom Holland himself. Marvel head Kevin Feige said:

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it.”
