Robin Williams Works Genie’s Magic In Never-Before-Seen ‘Aladdin’ Outtakes

As Disney celebrates 23 years since the iconic Aladdin was released in cinemas, and prepares for its digitally-remastered re-release, never-before-seen clips from the vault have now been released: showing a rare insight into the magic that the late Robin Williams worked behind the scenes and in the voice over booth during Aladdin’s production.

Good Morning America rounded up Aladdin’s lead cast and its key creatives overnight, to release a teaser of the footage available as extras in Aladdin’s new edition, and remember the geni(e)us of Williams. Writer/director Ron Clements explained that “there was nobody else that could be genie,” as the part was specifically written with Williams in mind:

“Yeah, we wrote the part with Robin in mind. We didn’t know if he would do it. And fortunately for us, he did. We were totally walking down the plank. If he said no, we were going to be in big trouble because the whole concept was built around Robin.”

The archived outtakes show Williams at work and highlights some character iterations of genie that didn’t make it on screen.
