LOVE: Phoebe Waller-Bridge Is Auctioning Off Her Golden Globes Suit For Bushfire Relief

Fleabag mastermind Phoebe Waller-Bridge is auctioning off her powerful Golden Globes suit to raise money for bushfire relief, the actor announced at the awards ceremony. This was originally going to be a different story about the beloved star, but she just keeps on delivering.

Fleabag was awarded best television series, music or comedy, at the 2020 Golden Globes. It was Waller-Bridge’s second award for the night, after she took home the gong for best performance by an actress in a TV series, musical or comedy, for her role as Fleabag.

The divine human being wore a couture suit by Australian label Ralph & Russo. If you want the fancy description: “Black tailleur crafted in Chantilly lace, featuring a silk duchess tuxedo lapel and a geometric black and gold ribbon appliqué finished with hand embellishment.”

Speaking to reporters after her win, Waller-Bridge shared the lovely news.

“We’re going to auction it and the money raised from it will go towards relief in Australia,” she said. “I think it’s a beautiful idea from the team and I’m really excited to be a part of that.”

Waller-Bridge’s heartwarming gesture to the Australian people was one of many during the Hollywood awards ceremony. Ellen DeGeneres, who was honoured with the Carol Burnett Award, opened her acceptance speech with, “Australia, I love you. My heart goes out to everyone suffering in Australia, all the animals that we’ve lost.” Aussie actor Russell Crowe had a message read on his behalf after he won best actor in a television limited series or motion picture for The Loudest Voice, urging those with influence and power to focus on climate change.

“Russell Crowe could not be here with us tonight because he is at home in Australia protecting his family from the devastating bushfires,” Jennifer Aniston read for him. “He sent along this message in case he won.”

Make no mistake, the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate-change based. We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is. That way we all have a future. Thank you.

EARLIER:

During her acceptance speech for Fleabag‘s win, Waller-Bridge offered a special thanks to one Mr Barack Obama.

If you’re not already giggling, here’s a recap: To celebrate the end of the year, Obama shared his favourite films and TV shows of 2019. Fleabag season 2 came in first place for TV shows, on top of Unbelievable and Watchmen. If Obama watched season 2, he must have watched season 1, and if he watched season 1, that means he – and his family, probably – watched Fleabag enthusiastically masturbating to one of his speeches. What a moment in time.

Speaking on behalf of the incredible cast and crew, Waller-Bridge gave her thanks to all those who helped make the series happen. And then, because she had to, she shot her shot.

“Personally, I’d also like to thank Obama for putting us on his list,” she said. “And as some of you may know, he’s always been on mine.

“And if you don’t get that joke, please watch season 1 of Fleabag really, really quickly,” she added.

What a woman.
