The Fired ‘Han Solo’ Directors Have Finally Addressed That Whole Fiasco

The directors unceremoniously booted from the standalone Han Solo film have publicly addressed their departure for the first time, adding a lil’ bit of context to the massive decision.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who were dismissed from the Star Wars flick in June, told a Vulture Festival audience that the schism between them and Disney brass stemmed from their directorial approach.

“The experience of shooting the movie was wonderful,” Lord said, before expressing nought but love and affection for the remaining players, and likening the decision to a break up.

We had the most incredible cast and crew and collaborators. I think in terms of us leaving the project, I think everybody went in with really good intentions and our approach to making the movie was different than theirs. That was a really big gap to bridge, and it proved to be too big.

Sometimes people break up, and it’s really sad, and it’s really disappointing, but it happens and we learned a lot from our collaborators and we’re better filmmakers for it.

We’re really proud of the work we did on the movie and we wish everybody the best.

That statement echoes earlier reports that Lord and Miller’s loose, improvisational style was not what Disney and Lucasfilm expected for such a massive endeavour.

Miller hammed it up a bit, saying “we’re super well-adjusted, obviously we’re doing great. We’re super drunk right now,” before reiterating his partner’s feel-good sentiments.

“As Phil said, we had such a great relationship with cast and crew, we were really rooting for them,” Miller said.

Lord and Miller, perhaps best known for writing and directing The Lego Movie, and for directing the new Jump Street films, said they’re back at work on a Lego film sequel and an animated take on the Miles Morales Spider-Man storyline.

Funnily enough, Donald Glover – who portrays a young Lando Calrissian in Solo – once voiced Morales in Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man series. Swings and roundabouts.

Solo, now directed by Ron Howard, hits screens May 25 2018.
