Peter Dinklage Asks ‘Game Of Thrones’ Fans To Stop Effing Buying Huskies

It seems insane that this needs to be said, but here it is: don’t adopt dogs on the fly because you really, really like the fictional dog in a fictional movie. Capiche?

Peter Dinklage has teamed up with PETA for one of their more sane campaigns*, which is to get Game of Thrones fans to stop adopting (and then dumping) huskies because they happen to look like direwolves.

*Never forget.

In a statement, he said:

“Please, to all of Game of Thrones’ many wonderful fans, we understand that due to the direwolves huge popularity, many folks are going out and buying huskies. Not only does this hurt all the wonderful homeless dogs waiting for a chance at a good home in shelters, but shelters are reporting that huskies are being abandoned as often happens when dogs are bought on impulse, without understanding the dog’s needs.

“Please, please: if you’re going to bring a dog into your family, make sure you’re prepared for such a tremendous responsibility and remember to always, always adopt from a shelter.”

Dog ownership is a huge responsibility in general, but huskies have shitloads of energy, can be stubborn as hell, and need a lot of time and attention. Even without the popularity of direwolves on Game of Thrones (when production deigns to spend the money on them, anyway), they’re already overrepresented in dog shelters because people don’t know what they’re getting into when they fall in love with a cute husky pup.

PETA points out that the same trend of buying up dog breeds happened after the wild successes of 101 Dalmations, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Legally Blonde and Men in Black. So look… maybe put more thought into the pup you’re going to be looking after for 10-15 years? Same goes to you, wanna be Instafamous dog owners.
