NIGHTMARE: ‘Westworld’ Confirms It Won’t Start Its Second Loop ‘Til 2018

As expected, the season finale of Westworld was all sorts of epic. If you haven’t seen it yet, tell your boss to EAD and run home to get around it – your soon-to-be unemployed status will be worth it.
But, as you might’ve seen on the interwebs, the franchise is busting our balls saying season two won’t be airing until 2018
tfw u realise ur gonna be deprived of Westworld for 2 more years.
Yes, truly devastating shit.
Executive producers and creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy gave an interview describing why they’re deviating from the traditional one-year-later-release most TV shows follow – and while we’re obviously gutted that this is the case, we feel where they’re coming from.

“We won’t be on the air until 2018,” says Nolan.

“We started that conversation with the network when were shooting Episode 2 and we realised the complexity of trying to write and produce the show at the same time.”
A contributing factor to Westworld’s general awesomeness is its semi-on-the-go style of production, but to nail this, they need breathing room.
“Sometimes you find yourself in this place where you have to wear all these hats at once,” he says.
“You have to write, shoot, and cut simultaneously. We wanted to in the second season spend some more time writing, then switch gears into production, then cut. So we’re not going to follow the annual year-on-year tradition of television. Television’s changing. And the ambition of the project is such that we’re going to take our time to get the second season right.”
Additionally, both Nolan and Joy have, y’know, other shit to work on (‘cos they’re offensively talented and should be spreading that gift to every man and their French Bulldog).
“We both work in the movie business as well, and in the movie business the best that you can possibly hope for with a film franchise is to turn around another instalment in two or three years. So really on that schedule, we’re doing great.”
Oh, and if you’re cynical mind’s thinking (after what you’ve just read) that a 2018 release date is sounding ambitious, don’t worry – Joy’s confirmed they’re already cracking on it:
“We’ve started working on scripts and outlines,” says Joy.
“It’s looking good. It’s looking very ambitious. There’s some surprises and bits of it that you won’t see coming. I’m having fun.”
Guess we’ll just have to bunker down until then, and choose to see the beauty in this world instead.
