Netflix’s New ‘Nappily Ever After’ Is All About Self-Love And Acceptance

Netflix has yet again made me emotional with another peek at a new film, and this time it isn’t just a romantic comedy, it’s a liberating and self-empowering tale too. It’s called Nappily Ever After and it looks absolutely quality.

Based on the novel of the same name by Trisha R. Thomas, Nappily Ever After introduces us into the life of Violet Jones. From the outside Violet’s got the perfect life.

She’s got beautiful hair – maintained by countless salon appointments, which she absolutely prides herself on – a great job, and a handsome long term doctor boyfriend. But after a salon appointment goes wrong, ruining her perfectly straightened hair, Violet starts second guessing who she really is… beyond hair, clothes, and a perfect partner so she does the unthinkable.

On one particular night, a heavily intoxicated Violet takes the cutters and shaves all her hair off. The next day she awakes and well, a lot of screaming follows.

Forced to reevaluate her entire life, Violet has to face herself and discover what she really wants out of life.

“My hair was like a second job,” Violet says. “Now I get to focus on myself. I wonder who I’ll be.”

Keen, keen, K E E N.

The film stars Sanaa Lathan as Violet as well as Ricky Whittle, Ernie Hudson (!!!!!), and Camille Guaty.

Haifaa Al-Monsour directed the film, you might recognise her name from such titles as the 2017 film, Mary Shelley starring Elle Fanning, Maisie Williams, Douglas Booth, and Bel Powley.
