Mel Gibson To Make Film About Jewish Warrior

Mel Gibson is reportedly working on a new film about a hero from Jewish history, which is pretty much the easiest way for him to make headlines ever.

According to Variety, the film will be based on the life of Judah Maccabee, who kicked some serious Greco-Syrian ass in the second century, forcing their armies out of the holy land and forming a major part of the Hannukah (think Christmas, but eight days) story. Obvious problems with this prospect include Gibson’s very public, repeated and on-record anti-Semitism, which make him proposing this film about as logical as Charlie Sheen starring in a public health announcement about safe drug use.

In an even more bizarre twist, the film will be scripted by Joe Eszterhas, who you may remember writing other religiously-tinged epics like, uh, Basic Instinct and Showgirls. The film is set to be shot at Warner Bros. studios, during which time we imagine most Jews, hot Russian women, homosexuals and Latinos will exit stage left. Of course, Mel’s apologised, so we don’t know what everybody’s complaining about:

Let’s hope he keeps this one under three hours.
