People-watching and celebrity-spotting in Australia – and specifically Sydney – is about to turn into an elite sport, because there are big whispers that Marvel Studios is relocating down under for a while. Are my eyes bananas right now? Because they’re 100% PEELED.
A source with loose lips dropped the goss to Daily Telegraph’s Confidential last month, claiming the film production powerhouse is packing up its studio in the US, and shifting everything down to a hub in Sydney’s Moore Park for “the foreseeable future” – which is suspected to be at least five years.
Finally, something bloody good to come out of all of… everything that’s happened in the last 12 months.
The studio setting up shop in Australia means that all the special effects and green screen technology used to pull together all the huge films in the extended Marvel Cinematic Universe will be set up here.
Considering Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi are already in town to film Thor: Love and Thunder, I guess we can’t be surprised that Marvel has assessed the COVID-19 situation in Australia (pretty good, tbh) against the situation in the US (likely chaos) and made the (arguably wise) decision to hoof everything to somewhere safer.
The ~source~ spoke with Confidential, claiming that Australia is the only place in the world where films can be full shot with minimal restrictions, so it’s not surprising the company is pitching up down here.
“There is nowhere in the world where films can be shot in the way they can be here in Australia,” the source said.
“Sydney is the perfect place for the Marvel blockbusters because most are essentially shot in front of a green screen. The whole studio is essentially transplanting itself from the US.”
Fingers crossed this means we’ll have even more celebs hooning around Australia in the near future, as the extended Marvel family comes over for an extended stay for work.
But, importantly, let us never forget where the MCU started in the first place: Sydney, baby.
