Mark Ronson Apologises After “Sapiosexual” Comment Blows Up The Internet

Mark Ronson

It must be quite exhausting to be a celebrity and know that every dumb, off-handed comment you make has the potential to be picked up, scrutinised and blown up a hundred times on social media. Case in point, musician Mark Ronson, who has apologised this week, after a remark he made about possibly being sapiosexual got way out of hand.

In case you somehow missed this incredibly important breaking news story, the trouble started earlier this week, when Ronson appeared on Good Morning Britain. Earlier in the day, author Nichi Hodgson had joined the panel to discuss the concept of being sapiosexual, the idea of being attracted to “intelligence first” above other traits.

Old mate decided he liked the sound of that, so during his own appearance a short time later, he told hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway: “I feel like I identify as sapiosexual.” They congratulated him on coming out, the story blew the fuck up, and now here we are several days later, with him apologising for the remark, saying it was misconstrued.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Mark Ronson clarified that he was given the definition of sapiosexuality then asked how he felt about it, and his subsequent comments were taken out of context:

“[I replied] ‘That sounds great. Of course, who wouldn’t be?’ And they were like basically like, ‘OK, Mark Ronson identifies himself as sapiosexual, that’s great.’ And then they proceeded to ask me about Miley Cyrus’ dating life and something else I probably wasn’t that informed to talk about, either, and then that was it.”

He said he was taken aback when he returned to his hotel and found out that his appearance had already made headlines:

“It sounds like I went on a TV show to be like, ‘Guys, I have some big news!’ And the fact that I would go on and sort of declare myself – like as a heterosexual white male – part of any marginalized community was  terrifying to me, or just embarrassing.”

He said that he had hoped his remarks would be placed in context, but despaired “that’s not what happens on Twitter anymore.” So there you have it, folks, the long nightmare is over and we can all go back to living our lives.
