Man Shot Dead in Melbourne After Threatening Tony Abbott

A man who reportedly made threats against Prime Minister Tony Abbott has been shot dead tonight in Melbourne, and two police officers from the joint counter terrorism team have been stabbed.

Little more is known about the incident at this point, but 9 News report that one of the officers stabbed is from the Australian Federal Police. The other is a Victoria Police officer, who is reportedly in critical condition in hospital.
The incident occurred near the Endeavour Hills police station, 35km outside of Melbourne. The Heatherton Road area has reportedly been blocked off following the incident.
The nature of the threats against Abbott, who is presently making his way to New York for a UN Security Council meeting, is now yet known.
UPDATE: The Herald Sun report that the man shot was one of a number of people who have recently had their passports cancelled.
The officers were reportedly stabbed by an occupant of a car that they pulled over outside the Endeavour Hills police station. It is believed they were attempting to detain and question the man in relation to threats against the Prime Minister.
One officer is reportedly in Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition. The other is in The Alfred Hospital, and his condition is currently unknown.
