Looks Like Emily Blunt Could Be Your Next Marvel Superhero

Marvel and Disney have long copped criticism for the fact that the movies they produce are all gigantic sausage fests, with no stand-alone female superhero amongst throngs and throngs of dudes.
Scarlett Johansson herself even took a crack at them for this, when she starred in Black Widow: Age Of Me, the SNL sketch that spun her character off into a cheesy, generic romantic comedy, implying that Marvel doesn’t really “get” women.
In an attempt to address their lack of meaty lady parts, the studio have announced that a stand-alone Captain Marvel movie will hit theatres in November 2018, as part of their third phase of films.
Since the announcement was made, there has been a great deal of speculation as to who will play the lead role, and some big (albeit hypothetical) names have been attached.
At one point or other, Charlize Theron, Bryce Dallas Howard and Jessica Chastain have all been considered strong contenders, but the current favourite is Edge Of Tomorrow star Emily Blunt.
It seems Marvel have been chasing her for a while – in an interview last year, she spoke about how she was approached for the roles of both Black Widow and Peggy Carter, but had to turn them both down because of scheduling conflicts.
“Inside sources” – gotta love ’em – claim that Blunt has in fact already signed on to play Captain Marvel, although if this is true, there has not been any official word from her or the studio.
It was rumoured that Marvel had offered Angelina Jolie $US 20 million to direct Captain Marvel, although that apparently didn’t work out. Writers Nicole Perlman (Guardians Of The Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) are currently working on the script.
