Reading John Green is a rite of passage in high school so it comes as a lovely surprise to discover that the author’s best-selling / extreme teen angst novel Looking for Alaska has finally been adapted for the screen.
Unlike The Fault in Our Stars, this novel is headed to the small screen as an original series on Hulu.
Looking for Alaska follows teenager Miles “Pudge” Halter (Charlie Plummer, The Clovehitch Killer) as he enrols in a boarding school to go and “seek a Great Perhaps.” He falls in love with the mysterious Alaska Young (Kristine Froseth, Sierra Burgess Is a Loser) and finds a group of loyal friends. But after an unexpected tragedy strikes, Miles and his close mates attempt to understand their sudden reality.
The series also stars Denny Love, Jay Lee, Landry Bender, Sofia Vassilieva, Uriah Shelton, Jordan Connor, Ron Cephas Jones (This Is Us), and Timothy Simons (Veep).
Looking for Alaska, all eight episodes of it, will hit Hulu on October 18 so hopefully a streaming service in Australia will strike a deal *cough cough* Stan. Otherwise… well, you know.
Earlier this year, Netflix announced the cast for its adaptation of another Green novel – Let It Snow co-written by Lauren Myracle and Maureen Johnson.
If you’re unfamiliar with this one, it’s pretty much three holiday romances in one which kick off after a terrible snowstorm buries the residents of Gracetown under a whole heap of snow on Christmas Eve. One girl is left stranded on a train and meets a stranger, three friends compete in a race to the Waffle house, and another girl is forced to take a cold hard look at herself.
The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka leads the cast and is joined by Shameik Moore (Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse), YouTube star Anna Akana, Jacob Batlon (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Isabela Moner (Instant Family), Odeya Rush (Dumplin’), and our very own Aussie actors Mitchell Hope from The Descendants and Liv Hewson AKA Abby Hammond from Santa Clarita Diet.
