Two years after his masterful film Get Out took us in and out of the sunken place, Jordan Peele has delivered a new movie – Us, and it’s already breaking records.

Over its debut weekend, Us made a stunning USD $70.3 million at the North American Box Office. The experts estimated USD $25.4 million so safe to say, it’s doing well.
And, according to Deadline:
It’s the largest debut ever for an original horror movie – surpassing A Quiet Place (USD $50.2 million), it nabbed the highest debut for an original R-rated opening – beating Ted (USD $54.4 million), it’s now the second-highest grossing opening of the year after Captain Marvel‘s USD $153.4 million, and it broke the record for an original live-action title opening in March.
In short, well, bloody hell.
Not to mention, Deadline reports that this is the best opening for a live-action original since Avatar in 2009.
Meanwhile, on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie’s sitting on a 94 per cent fresh rating from critics.
In Us, Adelaide Wilson (Lupita Nyong’o) returns to her beachside childhood home with her husband, Gabe (Winston Duke), and their two children played by Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex. Haunted by an unresolved trauma from her past, Adelaide becomes convinced that something terribly bad will happen to her family. After spending a tense day at the beach, they return home and in the evening, discover four masked figures standing in their driveway. When the masks come off, the family find themselves up against their own sinister golden scissor-wielding doppelgängers.
Speaking to Variety at its SXSW festival premiere, Peele said “you need to see the movie because there are a lot of messages to take away. What I’ve talked about so far is that we as a culture are afraid of invaders, we are afraid of the outside, our fear lies in the idea that there’s a bad guy coming to get us. This movie is the fact that we are our own worst enemy.”
Us will land in Aussie cinemas on March 28, 2019.
