Obviously, we’re all a bit devastated to learn that Jennifer Aniston and husband Justin Theroux are officially separated, but apparently there’s evidence to suggest they were never married in the first place. Or rather, a lack of evidence: TMZ has been unable to locate a marriage licence.
Now, we know what you’re thinking – yadda, yadda, yadda, TMZ is gossipy trash. And you’d be correct, except that when it comes to digging around county offices (or hospital records, for that matter) for official paperwork concerning our favourite celebrities, there’s none better.
And TMZ has checked out the marriage records in L.A. County “all the way back to 2010” and there’s just no record of a marriage licence. Its report acknowledges that there is such a thing as a confidential marriage license, “but we’re told they did NOT get one in L.A. Country.”
It also acknowledges that they could have gotten a marriage licence in any of the other 57 counties in California, but their “Jen sources who have had regular contact with her for years” say there’s been an ongoing discussion for years that the couple might not be legally married.
Jennifer and Justin were married (possibly) at a glitzy surprise wedding at their Bel Air mansion in June 2015, telling their star-studded guest list – including Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Tobey Maguire, Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, Jimmy Kimmel – that it was simply a surprise 44th birthday party for Justin.
Meanwhile, Aniston’s publicist has rubbished claims that she’s been using ex-husband Brad Pitt as a “shoulder to cry on” as “another fabrication”. Now who could have seen that one coming.
