For The Love Of Likes: Bloggers Reveal What Their Audiences Love

Another day, another dollar. Another year, another awards ceremony. Pedestrian’s teamed up with Intel to once again highlight the sublime talent of Australia’s blogosphere. The competition this year is on a whole new level – pitting the best-of-the best against each other. With the help of Intel, we’re curating content that’ll explore all things blogging. This will include things like tips on how to create your own platform, and how to deal with the h8rs. Get keen, y’all. It’s set to be, like, the best year yet (here’s hoping).
Wanna know what PEDESTRIAN.TV’s Blogster nominees are really good at? Getting a crap-ton of likes.

Love them or hate them, follow them or block them – there’s one thing that’s undeniable. They know their audience.

We’d hazard a guess that if you’ve read this far, you wouldn’t mind having a crack at becoming a ~social influencer~ yourself (or you’re trying to figure out why you have a fetish-like romance with a particular ‘Gramer’s pics). Take some notes and educate yo’self. Maybe we’ll be writing about you in a couple of years, #winkyface.

If you’re yet to realise, Georgia McDermott of George Eats explains that there’s one thing that any man or their dog could photograph and cop a few thousand likes from.

Fucking avocado on toast.
“Two things that seem to never fail me are spruced up avocado on toast, or a big plate of assorted rainbow veggies. It sometimes breaks my heart a bit that the avocado toast I threw together in ten minutes outperforms the cake I spent hours testing and then retesting and then photographing, but there you go – people love avo!”

What a time to be alive?

D’MARGE‘s Luc Wiesman knows what’s up. He’s the first to admit the blogosphere consists of people you’d avoid like the plague IRL.

“Our readers tend to always comment on both my own and our content’s honesty. Nothing is ever taken too seriously. Most of the internet is full of self-promoting wankers and I’m the first to call myself when I’m doing it.

There’s a few topics which people go crazy about. Sneakers, watches… and boobs. But we’re slowly moving away from that and into more long-form editorial. There’s only so many words one can write about boobs.”

As a website that also discusses breasts frequently – feels, Luc.
Patrick Stevenson of Hobo Gestapo shares the confusion we’ve all felt with Instagram at one stage or another, as well as some pretty brazen feelings towards its culture in general.

Instagram is pretty fucked. I love it but I just don’t get it sometimes… I’ll post a picture which I really, truly love. Something I believe in and think is stylistically awesome [with] the composure and lighting spot on and it will get shit-all likes. Then I’ll put up a selfie of me being a douche in a suit or something and it’ll get heaps of likes, I just don’t get it.

People also love controversy, they love stuff they can relate to, they love tagging their friends and saying “SQUAD GOALS” or “LIT FAM SWAGETTI TIMES” fuck, I hate people who use these words. I just realised I talked about hating people all the way through this, I actually love everyone, it’s 2am and I’ve been shooting all night, help me.”

Raised By The Wolves‘s Sarah Bahbah preaches Marketing-101: sex sells.

“At the moment my followers are still going crazy over the Sex and Takeout series. I like that even after nearly a year of sharing the photos, it’s still universally relatable and fans continue to tag their lovers and friends in the post saying “us tonight” or “this could be us but you playin’” etc. It’s also super special to see fans recreating my photos or sharing their own experiences by using the #SexAndTakeout hashtag. At one point it got a little overwhelming – there were cases of my inbox getting flooded with couples sharing sex selfies… but there was no food. THE FOOD NEVER CAME. :/”

So now you’ve seen what works for these ~social influencers~ you’re all the more prepared to build/bolster your own cult-following. Keep your eyes peeled for more examples of how to create/improve your channels (as told by our Blogster nominees) in the lead up to our this year’s awards.
