Disney’s New Streaming Service Has A Name & Will Be Cheaper Than Netflix

To compete against Netflix, Disney went ahead and created their own streaming service due for launch sometime in 2019. Despite a lot of details being under wraps, the service finally has a name – Disney Play.

In an in depth feature published by Variety, Disney chairman-CEO Bob Iger says the launch will be “the biggest priority of the company during calendar [year] 2019.”

But don’t expect the same seemingly never-ending content that exists on Netflix. Iger told Variety Disney Play will have a “lighter content load” which means the service will be cheaper than Netflix.

To make up for numbers, Disney’s really counting on their brands AKA Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, and general Disney-branded titles to attract subscribers.

“[This] creates a demand and gives us the ability to not necessarily be in the volume game, but to be in the quality game.”

(Shade.)

So, speaking of the “quality game”, Disney Play will have the 2019 titles of Captain Marvel, Toy Story 4, Frozen 2, the live-action remakes of Dumbo and The Lion King, and Star Wars: IX. Parents – lots of parents are going to subscribe to this one.

Of course, that’s not all.

The streaming service is also copping the final 12 episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a beloved animated series recently revived for a proper and satisfying ending. Then there’s the live-action re-imagining of The Lady and the Tramp starring Justin Theroux and a possible Tessa Thompson in the lead roles, the High School Musical series (!!!), the animated Monsters Inc. show, and a brand new live-action and yet to be titled Star Wars series with none other than Jon Favreau at the wheel.

Side note: This Star Wars series will have 10 episodes and will reportedly cost somewhere around the $100 million USD mark, as originally reported by The New York Times

Sounds about right.

Add a bunch of existing Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars films and you’ve got yourself yet another place to spend your money.

Although, this does come at a cost. Variety reports Disney will lose $300 million USD in annual revenue after pulling their titles from Netflix. That’s a shit ton of money so Disney’s going hard here.

However, Netflix will probably keep Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher etc… or maybe they’ll both stream it, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Disney Play is expected to launch sometime in 2019.
