Daniel Radcliffe Explains Why He Won’t Be Watching ‘Cursed Child’ Anytime Soon

Everyone’s sweet fave Daniel Radcliffe hopped on Late Night with Seth Meyers yesterday to promote his brand new Broadway show The Lifespan of a Fact. Of course, because he is Harry goddamn Potter, the franchise came up… particularly, that other humongous Broadway show Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. 

During the interview, Meyers asked the 29-year-old if he’s seen the play and as it turns out, he definitely has not.

“I’m probably not going to see it, I don’t have plans to,” Radcliffe revealed. “Not because I don’t think it would throw me into some existential crisis of like ‘Oh, is that what happened’ – I just feel like it would not be a relaxing evening at the theatre to be watching that. 

“I feel like I would be being watched for my reaction and maybe that is completely conceited and egotistical and people wouldn’t care but I do feel like it might – if I was just surrounded by Harry Potter fans, I would feel it would be a little odd.” 

Yeah look, fair enough.

After Meyers suggested using a disguise Radcliffe responded: “The thing about a disguise is that if it stops working, then you’re just a dude who wore a disguise.” 

“I remember there was one year where me and Rupert Grint ended up – we were at the Reading Music Festival together and for whatever reason, ‘cos we were young and cool and edgy, we had access to old World War II gas masks so we put them on and were running around the concert and it got really hot very quickly and it was very hard to breathe in them so we just took them off and then everybody was like ‘who are those two idiots in gas masks? Oh, look who that is’ – it was not a good feeling.” 

Again, a fair point.

Anywhoo, The Lifespan of a Fact is a comedy co-starring Cherry Jones and Bobby Cannavale. It tells the tale of John D’Agata (Cannavale) who finds himself in trouble when Radcliffe’s fact-checker character starts to analyse an article he wrote and has yet to be published.

Back home, the Australian production of Cursed Child is coming in hot. The crew recently shared a behind-the-scenes video of the team prepping for their iconic roles.

The cast includes Kiwi bloke Gareth Reeves as Harry Potter, the champ that is Gyton Grantley (Underbelly, House Husbands, perfect casting) as Ron Weasley, Paula Arundell as Hermione Granger, and Lucy Goleby as Ginny Weasley. 

The really long play is split up into two parts so you can either put a whole day aside to watch it or experience it over two different days, the choice is yours.

The play will exclusively run at Melbourne‘s Princess Theatre from January 2019.
