Australian Film Institute To Launch “Australian Academy”

In a bid to improve domestic and international recognition of Australian film, the Australian Film Institute (AFI) will launch an “Australian Academy” which implements recognized principles from both the AMPAS (USA) and BAFTA (UK).

“By drawing on international models, we anticipate greater recognition both here and abroad for Australia’s most talented screen practitioners,” said AFI chief executive Damian Trewhella. “We envisage that this will lead to greater opportunities for those working in the industry, as well as greater audience recognition and connection with Australian screen content.”

The Academy will be comprised of accredited professional members only with support from an “Honorary Council” made up of key industry members including those from crafts and guilds. Sounds Medieval. Vaguely. Long term benefits include unity, prestige and better recognition for Australian film and the awards that honour them. Short term benefits include the ability to finally divorce ourselves from the American Film Institute (the famous-er AFIs) and melodramatic pop punk bands who wore way too much eyeliner.
