April Fools’ Pranks Of Note For 2013

The Internet was a consortium of April Fool’s Day hoaxers and pranksters on 1 April, 2013, with a host of credible sources and organisations taking part in the annual gotcha-fest targeting gullible chumps. Here are some of the most notable pranks of this year…

JAMES FRANCO, SETH ROGEN IN PINEAPPLE EXPRESS SEQUEL: Sony Pictures released a trailer for the sequel to 2008’s bumbling stoner hit Pineapple Express. Considering its claim as “the most anticipated sequel in human history” and the return of the original movie’s big name comic cast including James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson, the trailer seems surprisingly low budget…

YOUTUBE’S SEARCH FOR ‘BEST VIDEO EVER’: It turns out the entire YouTube concept was built around an elaborate competition to discover the Best Video Ever. YouTube presenters are reading out the name of the nominated videos (i.e. every video uploaded during the eight years of Youtube’s existence) and, eventually, the ultimate winner will be declared after which YouTube will delete all other videos henceforth.

ANDREW W.K. QUITS PARTING: Come on mate. At least try to fool someone.

VIMEO’s VIMEOW TAKEOVER: Video sharing platform Vimeo underwent a major feline themed re-brand, something they’ve been working on for the “last half-dozen years”, apparently. The new features primarily consist of chuckly cat puns e.g. Following is now called Patiently Stalking; The Forum is now called The Litterbox; and Your mouse is now an actual mouse.

GOOGLE INTRODUCES ‘GOOGLE NOSE’: Google is gaga for a good April Fools prank (like adding the ‘Really Advanced’ Google Search option in 2012) and this year proved no different with the introduction of Google “Nose”, a gross new search function where users can search according to smells. It’s scentsational!

FUNNY OR DIE LAUNCHES KICKSTARTER OFFSHOOT ‘KICKSTART OR DIE’: LOL-devoted online video library, Funny Or Die, launched its own crowd funding platform called KickStartOrDie.com, dedicated to funding big screen remakes of some of the gone-but-not-forgotten television shows of the 1990s, including “Darkwing Duck”, “Family Matters” and “Sliders”.

“Darkwing Duck” bid for funds:

“Sliders” bid for pledges:

PETER DINKLAGE TO EXIT GAME OF THRONES FOR SEASON 4: Some insensitive jerks at unofficial HBO news website ‘HBO Watch’ announced in an “exclusive” scoop that the tremendous Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) would be replaced in Season 4 with another actor of short stature Warwick Davis: Leading Game of Thrones actor and Emmy winner Peter Dinklage will not return to HBO’s flagship program for a fourth season in 2014. In a press conference the morning of April 1st, 2013 show creators David Benioff, Dan Weiss alongside George R.R. Martin made the announcement to stunned members of the media.

TWITTER PAYWALL FOR VOWELS: Twitter or ‘Twttr’ introduced a new “two-tiered system” whereby users have to pay a premium in order to tweet with vowels. Under the new paywall Twitter patrons pay five dollars a month to include the use of vowels in tweets or a free service with consonants only – like so:

VIRGIN LAUNCHES FIRST GLASS BOTTOM PLANE: Not recommended for vertigo sufferers, benevolent rich guy Sir Richard Branson revealed Virgin’s plans to build a prototypical glass bottom plane. Sir Richard blogged: “I’m thrilled to announce that Virgin has created another world-first with the introduction of the technology required to produce the world’s first glass-bottomed plane. This technological innovation coincides with the start of Virgin Atlantic Airways’ first ever domestic service to Scotland.” LOL! SCOTLAND – AS IF! Dead give away.

NEW BLACK KEYS SINGLE: Patrick Carney of the Black Keys tweeted “Check out our new single!!!!!” which you can listen to here.
