It’s hard to believe that Psy’s monolithic reign over the landscape of YouTube videos has finally come to an end but, after years on the throne, he has been ousted by another.
Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style‘ – a song that at this stage has only remained unheard among those South American tribes that are yet to make contact with the outside world – previously held the title as the single most watched YouTube video since it was propelled ahead of Justin Bieber‘s ‘Baby‘ in 2012. It was the first video to ever reach a billion views on the site, a figure it cracked on December 21, 2012 (that day the world was supposed to end, if you remember that).
Sitting in its place now, however, is ‘See You Again‘ by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth, the song written as a tribute to Paul Walker for the soundtrack of ‘Furious 7‘.
The BBC is reporting that its time at the top might be limited, with ‘Despacito‘ having accrued 2.5 billion views in the short space of six months, as compared to ‘See You Again‘, which took the same amount of time to reach its first billion.
