This is it, folks. The big one. The White People’s Choice Awards Academy Awards just wrapped up at the Dolby Theater, and the newest batch of cinema’s elite have been honoured with weird, anthropomorphic statuettes.
While it was heralded as a damn fine piece of storytelling, Spotlight has become the latest ‘outsider’ to nab Best Picture. Not unheralded: Leonardo DiCaprio, a bloke who you may have gathered hasn’t had the greatest Oscars luck, finally took out the big one for The Revenant. Joining him as Best Actress is Brie Larson, for her turn in Room.
Mad Max: Fury Road absolutely cleaned up for the technical but oh-so-grungy mastery displayed on-screen. Jenny Beavan was honoured for her contributions to costume design – anybody who took a gander at Immortan Joe’s fucked-up face-piece knows she was a shoo-in – while Lesley Vanderwalt, Elka Wardega and Damian Martin were given the nod in makeup and styling, for their subtle use of chrome spray-paint.
There were other movies too, apparently. Some included bears, boxing, bank loans and the inside of a little girl’s head, and some of them were actually pretty decent. Have a gander:
