It looks like a standard paint by the numbers assessment. Enlist one of Hollywood’s most likable actors to play the sporting world’s (formally) most likable athlete and cast South Africa’s most beautiful export to portray the ravishing victim. Bar the inevitable probability of an extremely poor South African accent (sorry Leo), that casting of Ryan Gosling and Charlize Theron to play Oscar Pistorius and his tragically killed girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, seems like a stroke of genius if your willing to ovelook the fact that the story has far from having run its course, with Pistorius’ case still before the courts.
It may seem strange for the risk adverse studios to invest in the development of a story where it is not yet clear whether the protagonist is a reckless villain or a tortured fallen hero, but the Daily Mirror has reported that several projects are in the works and Gosling and Theron are at the top of the wish list.
“You’ve got one of the world’s most famous sportsmen under arrest and a beautiful young woman who meets a violent death,’ says a source. ‘Scripts began doing the rounds within days of the scandal breaking.”
“Ryan has the kind of quiet magnetism that would make this project work – plus there’s some mystery about him. Although Ryan has been saying publicly that he wants to take a break from acting to relax, executives will be falling over themselves to woo him once the scripts are finalised.”
Gosling has recently announced plans to take a break from the biz following another packed year with A Place Beyond The Pines, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives, his directorial debut, How To Catch A Monster, and a yet to be titled Terrance Malick project locked into Gosling’s current schedule. Could this be the kind of Oscar baiting (sorry!) project that puts those retirement plans on hold. Next up, we’ll see Theron in George Miller’s Mad Max re-boot.
