Music Video Debut Confirms Troye Sivan Is Your Next Teen Idol

I’ve said it once this week and I’ll say it again: teens are terrifying. They’ve evolved into an entirely alien species, one weaned on emoji and hashtags and doing it for the Vine. The only drug they ostensibly need is the love they give and receive on social media. See, terrifying.
Few teens have successfully harnessed and wielded that tool to the extent that Perth-based youth Troye Sivan has. It’s for that reason that he won a Teen Choice Award on Monday; it‘s why last year he was anointed the supreme victor of the 2013 PEDESTRIAN.TV Blogster Awards, and it’s for that same reason that in the interim he has recorded his imminent debut EP, the first video from which has been released today to typically voracious teen social media fanfare.

Directed by Melburnian Jeremy Koren (nom de .GIF, Grey Ghost), ‘Happy Little Pill’ is the lead single taken from his semi-eponymous debut TRXYE, and the accompanying video is a pared back, naval gazing affair tailored to a Tumblr attuned audience and seasoned with a distinctly ‘Royals’ flavour (“Sipping life from bottles/Tight skin, bodyguards/Gucci down the boulevard/Cocaine, dollar bills/And my happy little pill”). Not altogether unsurprisingly, the single is #1 in 21 countries and the EP it’s taken from has gone to #1 in 31 countries based on the strength of pre-sales alone.

Speaking of, nominations and submissions for The 2014 Blogster Awards powered by Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and Intel Australia are now open. If you know someone – or are someone like Troye – who gives good World Wide Web, you can and should HEAD HERE to celebrate your favourite contributions to the rich tapestry of the Internet.
