The father of one of the teens wanted in connection to the murder of Australian man Lucas Fowler and his girlfriend has told the media that the pair “liked to play war” and had devoted themselves to training and camouflage.
Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, grew up together in Port Alberni in British Columbia, Canada, and have been described as inseparable, sharing an obsession with video games and Airsoft.
The pair have been missing since July 19, when their Dodge truck was found abandoned and on fire on the Alaska Highway in northern British Columbia. They’re wanted for the murders of 23-year-old Sydney man Lucas Fowler and his 24-year-old American girlfriend Chynna Deese, who were found shot to death on July 15, and for the murder of an unidentified man in his 50s or 60s found on July 19 just two kilometres from the teens’ burnt-out truck.
However, Bryer Schmegelsky’s father believes the pair are not to blame for the murders, but could have possibly witnessed the unidentified man’s death and hidden in the woods using camouflage in order to avoid being killed themselves.
In an interview with local media, Alan Schmegelsky said that his son had asked him for an Airsoft gun – a low-powered replica gun used in shooting sports – to “play war” in the woods with his friend.
My son, he’s like, they’re huge into video games – all kids are – and two Christmases ago he asked me for an Airsoft gun, which is a replica gun, right?
So he was telling me, ‘Well me and the fellas, we like to go in the woods and play war,’ right?
So knowing that the both of them are totally into that, if there was any threat, they would have done what they’ve actually trained themselves to do and they would have camouflaged themselves in the woods.
However, investigators have linked the two young men to the deaths of all three people and continue the hunt for the pair. They are believed to have last been spotted in a grey Toyota RAV4 in Saskatchewan, more than 2000km from British Columbia. Canadian police have warned the public not to approach the pair, and to treat them as dangerous.
