This Is Not A Real Slug

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but that slug isn’t real. It has never existed in the real world, not even as a robot. In fact, the entire world around the slug is fake, too. Sorry about that.

It’s all part of the latest work by 3D artist, Rense de Boer, who uses a technique called photogrammetry to create insanely realistic environments in the Unreal Engine, which is popular for making video games.

It looks good as hell, right? Shit yeah it does, that’s because photogrammetry uses real-life photos of objects from a bunch of different angles to recreate an image that has realistic depth. The result is, as you can see, nothing short of breathtaking. Check out the video below. Do yourself a favour and watch in HD.

A delicious scene. In terms of his background, de Boer used to be the technical art director at DICE, the company behind the Battlefield series. To create the masterpiece, he was given two GTX 1080 Ti graphics card by Nvidia. For the lesser nerds out there, this is one of the best graphics processors currently on the market.

It’s another step towards the realm of ultra-realism in video games, which is a topic I recently discussed with some of the biggest names in gaming, including PUGB creator, Brendan Green, and Xbox general manager, Shannon Loftis. You can check that out at the link below.

For those who might be curious – yes, I have named the slug, it’s Mark. His favourite movie is Face/Off, he only listens to Norwegian black metal, and he shares none of the nostalgic feelings you have about Tamagotchis. He will not be swayed on any of these.
