Back in the old days, the internet was generally used with a specific purpose in mind. Maybe you had to look something up for a school project or you just wanted to know how to beat the fuck out of Gannon in Ocarina of Time.
Fast forward to now and the internet has become a daily crutch. I’d hazard a guess that you check your Facebook notifications before you even take your morning dump. We’re constantly online purely because it’s so damn easy to be.
YouTube channel exurb1a has made a humorous video that explains how this always-on behaviour distracts us from meaningful tasks in favour of consuming time-wasting content we really don’t give a toss about either way.
It’s this ease of constant entertainment that the video creator reckons has diminished our attention spans. He says you’re more likely to aimlessly browse Reddit for hours on end rather than picking up a new skill or reading book out of fear of being bored.
Can we get this lost attention back? Well, maybe, if you’re willing to give up useless internet time.
By limiting his online time only to when he needs it, he was able to concentrate on meaningful activities. It sounds fantastic, but let’s face it, the internet is pretty good.
He calls it “no wifi o’clock, motherfucker” and maybe we should all give it a go. Watch the full video below.
