The folks at PlayStation promised we’d be getting a new announcement every single day leading up to E3, and here’s our first one: an incredibly trippy take on Tetris from the geniuses behind Rez Infinite and Lumines Remastered.
One might be inclined to think that we’ve had enough takes on Tetris since it emerged from the Soviet Union back in 1984, but this actually looks kinda cool. Called Tetris Effect, it’s based less on the game and more on the ‘Tetris effect’ itself: the weird psychological phenomena named for the game. From Wikipedia:
The Tetris effect (also known as Tetris Syndrome) occurs when people devote so much time and attention to an activity that it begins to pattern their thoughts, mental images, and dreams.
The trailer is suitably insane, featuring odd cosmic imagery and an EDM soundtrack, as well as audio clips from contemporaneous news reports about the Tetris effect. It’s… a bit extra for what is essentially just Tetris.
Creator Enhance Games – headed up by puzzle maestro Tetsuya Mizuguchi – says that it will include “magical feeling of total immersion by surrounding you with fantastic, fully three-dimensional worlds that react and evolve based on how you play.”
Yes, it does have a VR component, if you’ve been absolutely stinging to immerse yourself in a fully three-dimensional Tetris experience. What a world, what a world.
We can expect to hear more about Tetris Effect at E3.
