Romance Was Born Lei On The Culture Clashes In Their Kawaii Hawaii Campaign

Romance Was Born have opened the shutters on their time-lapsed Kawaii Hawaii Spring collection campaign, shot by Simon Lekias and styled by designers Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales
Taking their cues and collaborating with Nipponophile artist and Hello Sandwich blogger Ebony Bizys, Kawaii Hawaii combines traditional Japanese garment silhouettes with the aesthetics of 1950s Hawaii via contemporary Shibuya, creating a cross-cultural hybrid that combines pleating with pastiche, and tucking with tiki totems.
Romance are also holding a moving sale of “archive pieces, fabrics and memoirs” at their Darlinghurst studio this Saturday (July 20th) from 10am – 5pm [details on their Facebook page]. If you can’t make it, there’s always a bargain to be had at their website, where Kawaii Hawaii will become available for purchase soon.
