Queen Gives Royal Nod; Gay Marriage Legalised In England And Wales

Her Majesty The Queen has done everyone in England and Wales a massive solid, by giving her Royal Assent to the Gay Marriage Bill—officially legalising gay marriage in England and Wales, with the first weddings expected to be held mid next year.

It’s a long-awaited move that will have her imminent great grandchild born in to a country that celebrates and embraces equality, where LGBT rights are continually improving. Not bad, grams.

Prime Minister David Cameron faced a fierce fight to put the bill in motion, meeting internal opposition from his Conservative Party. One MP in particular, Norman Tebbit, adamantly opposed the bill, who said in the lead up to yesterday’s historic announcement, “When we have a queen who is a lesbian and she marries another lady and then decides she would like to have a child and someone donates sperm and she gives birth to a child, is that child heir to the throne?” Well, okay. That actually sounds fabulous. Everyone really stopped listening to the loon when Tebbit said the bill would *surely* eventuate so that “maybe I’d be allowed to marry my son”. Hm. Or maybe you’d be allowed to fuck off forever?

England is now the 15th country to legalise gay marriage, paving the way for Australia to be a terribly unfashionable, rude latecomer to the party, despite Prime Minister Kevin Rudd supporting gay marriage before his recent return as PM.

Meanwhile, sneaky dictionary mavericks in the US are slyly taping over the definition of ‘marriage’ in dictionaries across public libraries and bookstores, changing the whole “man and a woman” bore to the accepting, “the formal union of two people by which they become partners for life.” Maybe the subtle brainwashing will trick the world in to altering the definition permanently? At this point, it seems like our only hope. You can download a sticker template to redefine those dictionaries who think they know better, in a bout of lexical-guerrilla warfare, here.
