Madison Magazine Axed

Another fashion magazine bites the dust at Bauer Media…

Madison Magazine today announced that it will cease publication following its June, 2013 issue (on-sale May 15). The brand website, madisonmagazine.com.au, will be decommissioned on June 18. While the news isn’t much of a surprise – Bauer Media has recently killed off other titles including Grazia – it is a shame for the local publishing industry and its loss will be deeply felt by magazine lovers across the country.

Industry insiders have speculated that Bauer Media may have based its decision to axe Madison on poor circulation figures and the imminent launch of its new women’s magazine, Elle in September. Bauer Media CEO Matthew Stanton said, “The decision to close a title is never easy but after recent and lengthy discussions with our joint venture partner, Hearst Magazines International, the conclusion was sadly drawn that for Madison to continue was no longer a commercially viable option.”

“I would like to express my respect for the Madison team for the way in which they continued to deliver a wonderful product while rumours of closure swirled around them. They should be proud of their professional and committed effort.”

When Madison officially closes its doors, 15 staff members will be left unemployed, including Editor Lizzie Renkert, who previously worked as deputy editor at rival Pacific Magazines publication Marie Claire. Earlier today, Renkert commented on the shuttering via the Madison Facebook page, saying, “It’s a very sad day for us at Madison. It was decided this morning that the June issue will be our last. I would like to thank my amazing, talented, hard-working team for being an inspiration to work with every day. And thank you to our readers for your support over the past 8 years – we have loved creating for and hearing from all of you. Lizzie x”

Bauer Media purchased ACP for $500 million in September last year.
